How to identify Dry Skin?

Dry skin lacks hydration and nourishment, making it highly susceptible to irritations. Its characteristics include roughness, a dull appearance, diminished suppleness, tendency to flake, and tightness. In severe instances, redness, cracks, and fissures may develop. Biologically, skin dryness is defined by three factors:

  • In dry skin, there is a decrease in the synthesis of ceramides, which are lipids found in the corneal layer that serve as intercellular cement. This reduction in ceramide synthesis affects the barrier function of the epidermis by altering cellular cohesion.
  • Dry skin is characterized by a deficiency in natural moisturizing factors (NMF). These factors, including hygroscopic substances such as amino acids, carbohydrates, and minerals, are typically found within the corneocytes of the epidermis. They play a crucial role in retaining water in the stratum corneum, thereby ensuring the hydration of the epidermis.
  • Dry skin often results from a deficiency in the production of fatty substances. Individuals with dry skin typically have insufficient sebum production by the sebaceous glands, leading to a disturbance in the hydrolipidic film. This film, normally situated on the surface of the epidermis, plays a crucial role in maintaining hydration and protecting against external aggressions like wind, cold, or pollution.

What are the benefits of Avocado Oil on dry skin?

People with dry skin highly value avocado oil due to its abundance of active ingredients that are beneficial for this skin type.

Avocado oil promotes the synthesis of ceramides.

Avocado oil contains polyunsaturated fatty acids, including linoleic acid from the omega-6 family. This component indirectly contributes to forming the skin barrier by initiating a series of biochemical reactions that stimulate cellular renewal. Additionally, it aids in ceramide synthesis within the stratum corneum.

Ceramides, formed through an amidation reaction between a sphingoid base and a fatty acid, include acylceramides when combined with linoleic acid. Avocado oil nourishes the skin and reinforces its impermeable barrier, reducing dehydration—a significant concern for individuals with dry skin.

Avocado oil helps restore the hydrolipidic film.

As mentioned earlier, the hydrolipidic film of dry skin is often weakened or deficient. This film comprises various active ingredients, including mono-unsaturated fatty acids like oleic acid (omega-9) and palmitoleic acid (omega-7). Avocado vegetable oil is abundant in these compounds, making its topical application beneficial for skin protection by strengthening the hydrolipidic film.

A human study confirmed that avocado vegetable oil has an occlusive effect on the skin. Researchers measured insensible water loss (IWL) before and 30 minutes after applying this botanical extract, noting a significant decrease in IWL. This indicates that avocado vegetable oil effectively shields the skin from dehydration.

Avocado oil is soothing

Dry skin, often susceptible to irritation and itching, benefits from soothing care. Avocado oil contains sitosterols and campesterols, molecules belonging to the phytosterol family, known for their anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds regulate inflammation processes. Applying avocado oil to the redness associated with dry skin is therefore recommended, as it offers a soothing effect.

How to use Avocado Oil?

Avocado oil can be applied to the face morning and evening, avoiding the eye area, as well as to areas of the body prone to dryness, such as the hands, feet, elbows, and knees. It can be used either undiluted or diluted, depending on personal preference and skin sensitivity.

To use pure avocado oil, extract a few drops and apply them to your skin. Gently massage in a circular motion to ensure effective absorption. Avocado oil can serve as the final step in your skincare routine, replacing your moisturizer. However, it's important to note that avocado oil is rich and oily, so it may be preferable to use it only in the evening. If used in the morning, it could leave your skin looking shiny and greasy throughout the day.

You can also incorporate avocado oil into your moisturizing cream for added benefits. Simply take a small amount of cream in your palm and add one or two drops of avocado oil. Mix the oil and cream together, then apply the mixture by gently massaging it into your skin to enjoy its nourishing effects.
