Consultation and Patch Test
Before your treatment, you'll need to visit our salon in Portsmouth for a quick patch test. This involves applying a quick IPL shot to a small area of your skin to check its reaction. During this session, we'll explain the treatment process in detail and guide you on how to prepare your skin before and after the procedure. This step ensures your skin is suitable for IPL hair removal and helps you feel confident and ready for the best results.
Preparation
Before your IPL hair removal session, we carefully prepare your skin by sterilizing and cleansing the treatment area to remove any bacteria or impurities. This ensures the IPL light works effectively without interference. We then mark the treatment areas with a white pen for precision, ensuring clarity for both you and your therapist. Finally, a cooling gel is applied to keep your skin comfortable and minimize any discomfort during the procedure.
Treatment
We use the Lynton Laser device for our IPL hair removal treatments, a system trusted by medical professionals and approved by the NHS. Known for its precision, it emits controlled pulses of light that target hair follicles directly. This targeted approach effectively disrupts hair growth, leaving your skin smoother and hair-free over time. The result is long-lasting, silky skin with minimal effort.
Aftercare
After your IPL treatment, mild redness and swelling in the treated area are common and usually fade quickly. We apply soothing aloe vera gel immediately to calm your skin and ease any discomfort. Following the aftercare instructions is essential: avoid direct sunlight and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen to protect the area, and skip hot showers, saunas, and strenuous exercise for the first 24 hours to prevent irritation. These steps help ensure the best results while keeping your skin healthy post-treatment.
How many session do I need?
The number of sessions required for IPL hair removal can vary depending on several factors, including your hair type, the area being treated, and the density of hair growth. Typically, most people require between 6 to 8 sessions to achieve optimal results. These sessions are usually spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart to effectively target hair during its growth cycle, as not all hairs are in the same phase of growth at the same time. During your consultation, we'll provide a more personalised treatment plan based on your specific needs and goals.
Does it hurt?
IPL hair removal typically involves some discomfort, but most people find it quite manageable. The sensation is often described as a quick snap of a rubber band against the skin. The level of discomfort can vary depending on the area being treated and your personal pain tolerance. We apply a numbing cooling gel before the procedure to help minimise any discomfort. Additionally, modern laser devices, like the Lynton laser we use, are designed to be more comfortable, with built-in cooling technologies that soothe the skin during treatment.
Can I have tanned skin or fake tan on?
It's recommended to avoid IPL hair removal on tanned or artificially tanned skin. Tanning alters the pigment of your skin, which can affect the effectiveness of the laser treatment and increase the risk of side effects, such as burns or discolouration. The IPL targets the melanin (pigment) in the hair follicles, and tanned skin can interfere with this process. Ideally, you should wait until any tan, natural or artificial, has faded before undergoing IPL hair removal. It's best to keep the treatment area out of the sun and avoid using self-tanning products for at least 4 to 6 weeks prior to treatment.
Can I go to the sun/holiday after the treatment? ?
t's best to avoid direct sun exposure after IPL hair removal treatment. The treated skin can be more sensitive to the sun, increasing the risk of sunburn and pigmentation changes. It's advisable to keep the treated area covered and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher for at least a month following the procedure. This helps protect your skin and ensure the best possible results from your IPL treatment. If you must be in the sun, wearing protective clothing and applying sunscreen regularly can help minimise risks.
